Hey business thinkers! I hope you’re doing well today.
Today I’m going to talk a bit about self-accountability. This is a really delicate balance as a business owner. And I’m talking about it today because it’s something that I was struggling with a bit as well right now.
The Spectrum
So there is always this sort of end of the spectrum.
On one side you’ve got to be nicer to yourself and see yourself with kind eyes and give yourself some grace. You’re only one human being there’s only so much you can do.
And on the other end, there’s this self-accountability piece. These are some things that if you say that you’re going to do and you promise you’re going to do them, it’s really important that you do.
And to find the balance between the two is really important!
So for me, putting out this regular content is a thing that I have accountability for myself that I need to do and that is holding myself to it. So, it doesn’t matter that I was busy this past week putting together a large presentation for an upcoming Summit and I used a lot of my time and energy on that.
Getting Stronger
None of that matters. It just matters that I do what I say I’m going to do.
This matters a lot, because if you don’t do the things you say you’re going to do – you break a promise with yourself and if you repeat that over and over enough times, you start to convince yourself that you’re smaller and less capable than you actually are!
Whereas, whenever you seize the thing (even if it’s uncomfortable) and you put your back against the wall and say “no this is something I’m definitely doing.”
Whenever you do that over and over again, you empowered yourself. You feel larger. Those scary things don’t seem quite so big.
Slay Your Dragons
A story I kind of use to describe that is you can think almost like this problem that you’re trying to do is like a dragon.
So when it’s an itty bitty baby dragon it still is kind of scary, but if you wait it probably only gets bigger and only gets worse, and eventually, it can fly and breathe fire and has super sharp claws!
So you’re much better off to take care of it while it’s small because it doesn’t get any easier as time goes by.
You’ve really got to dive in and take care of that and really recognize that some things make you feel bigger and some things make you feel smaller.
So if I hadn’t gotten together and put this content out on the schedule when I said I would, I would feel smaller.
I would feel weaker.
And it would encourage weaker and weaker behavior because that’s the identity I would have of myself in my head.
Versus now, doing it… Maybe this isn’t the best content I’ve ever done. Maybe this really resonates with you. I don’t know. But at least I’m achieving it and I can move on and feel like I’ve kept my promise up.
Self-Accountability For Your Business
So, I really encourage you to set promises for yourself and make sure you keep them. Within that range also recognized that you can’t do too much you only can do a certain amount. And that’s why for me there’s a lot of things I gave myself a lot of grace on.
But saying I’m putting out content every other week, I must do that.
That is part of the thing that I set up intentionally – to have that accountability piece.
So I encourage you to think about self-accountability.
It is really easy as a business owner to start to feel a little bit spoiled in a way. You finally have your own business. You are your own boss and it’s easy to decide that “Hey I’m the boss. I do whatever I want to. I don’t want to do the bookkeeping or the finances. I’m going to let it get months behind. Taxes are lame. I don’t want to file those. I don’t want to build out an operation manual or do training or have the uncomfortable meeting with the staff.” instead of the fun stuff.
It’s so easy to get in that right? And it’s a very very important you keep yourself accountable to doing the things that must be done in keeping everything moving forward.
If you have any questions hit me up in the comments I stay tuned for more.
Have a great one!
